Abstract

TESTS recently conducted by the Fire Research Station on behalf of the CAA to assess the effectiveness of onboard water sprinklers involved the construction of a test rig based on the fuselage of a Boeing 707 passenger aircraft. Major fire conditions were created outside and the flames were also drawn into the fuselage in a series of tests.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the perceived barriers that a secondary English teacher faced when attempting to discuss racial injustice through young adult literature in Mississippi.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors rely on Critical Whiteness Studies and qualitative methods to explore the following research question: What are the barriers that a White ELA teacher perceives when teaching about racial injustice through The Hate U Give?

Findings

The authors found that there were several perceived barriers to discussing modern racial injustice in the Mississippi ELA classroom. The participating teacher indicated the following barriers: a lack of racial literacy, fears of discomfort and an urge to avoid politics.

Originality/value

Much has been written about the urgent need for antiracist teaching practices in secondary English classes. This article explores the barriers a white ELA teacher perceived when attempting to discuss modern racial injustice through literature instruction in a white context of the “four pandemics” (Ladson-Billings, 2021).

Abstract

Marketing practice is increasingly being affected by new technologies, creating opportunities and threats for marketing practitioners. Much of the literature has concentrated on effects external to the firm such as the Internet's impact on market structure, or new business paradigms. However, the research reported on here highlights how new technologies are acting as internal agents of change, forcing firms to adapt to new processes, which in turn are disrupting existing hierarchies. The paper makes the case that this disruption will create opportunities for marketers, who have hitherto failed to be seen as key players at board level. It has been argued that marketing's focus needs to move to internal management and facilitation in order to enable enterprise‐wide market orientation to emerge as the dominant ethos of the firm. The respondents’ often blunt views on marketers’ abilities to lead this change are reported, making rather sombre reading for the profession. A number of possible routes were explored through which marketers could address these weaknesses, improve their influence within the firm, and capitalise on the internal disruption caused by new technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Disabled people who are the end‐users (EU) of health services have a poor record of inclusion, yet a major stake in the quality of scientific research that informs the development of health knowledge and interventions. In traditional rehabilitation research it has been the researcher who sets the agenda, including determining the research question, study design and methods, and who controls dissemination of findings. This paper aims to describe the development of an EU research consultation committee and to describe the evaluation protocol used to assess the effectiveness of the committee.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes the context and development of an EU research consultation committee (the committee) to promote collaboration between researchers and lay‐EUs within a research organization in New Zealand. It also describes the qualitative evaluation protocol to be used to assess the effectiveness of the committee over the first 12 months of operation in order to refine its process and procedures.

Findings

The paper discusses the issues and challenges involved in achieving collaboration between researchers and EUs in the rehabilitation research space and describes this consultation model as a positive example of making inclusion a reality. Challenges include building research capacity within the EU community and development of real models of collaboration and partnership in rehabilitation research.

Originality/value

It is argued that the integrity and relevance of clinical research is enhanced by the involvement of EUs in all aspects of the research process.
